Welcome
Welcome to 1st grade! It is exciting to be starting a new school year, and I am happy that your child is part of this exciting year at Traverse Mountain. I’m confident that with your support and encouragement, your child will have a great year. With teamwork between the teacher, parent, and the child we can make this the best year yet!
Home Reading
Students are required to read 20 minutes per school night. Students will keep track of their reading in their homework folders. Every night they should color in one icon for reading. At the end of the month parents will return the completed calendar to school, along with the fluency passages that we have had for that month. Home reading makes up a substantial part of their reading grade.
Curriculum
We will follow the curriculum adopted by the Alpine School District. Our first grade curriculum is based on what research has shown to be the best practices in education. Our main focus in all subject areas is hands-on, real life experiences that help each student build deeper understanding of the new things they are learning. A detailed list of the 1st grade standards that will be taught can be found at www.uen.org/core.
Projects and Fairs
We will be working on different projects throughout the year.
Language Arts
The 1st grade team at Traverse Mountain is using the Language Arts program “Reading Wonders”. This program will provide whole group reading, vocabulary, spelling, leveled readers, and center activities.
Miscellaneous Items
· Birthdays: Birthdays are happy times! Please feel free to bring treats on your child’s birthday. If your child’s birthday is in the summer, we will celebrate near their half birthday. Please remember that the district’s policy is that treats must be bought at a store. The time we will distribute these treats will be right after lunch. Please keep in mind any allergies that we have in our classroom. This year we have a peanut allergy and a pistachio allergy.
· 1st grade recess is at 10:15 AM - 10:30 AM
Lunch is 11:50 - 12:25
· Toys: One additional thing you can do that will really help is to make sure your child does not bring any small toys to class. Toys are not allowed in the classroom. They are a counter-productive distraction, and if found, will be confiscated. Please help me keep the classroom distraction-free.
· Phones: The school policy about phones in class is that they are not allowed. Students may have them in their backpacks, but they should not be used during the day. If a student uses a phone at an unauthorized time, the phone will be confiscated. Phones can be recovered in the office by a parent at the end of the day. This includes watches. Please do not call your child during school hours.
Behavior Management
Accentuate the positive! My behavior management plan is set up to do just this. From class parties, to class money, to end of the month fun activities, students have many opportunities to see how positive behavior can be rewarded.
If students fail to follow class rules or decide to misbehave, these are the steps that will be taken:
- For the 1st misbehavior a specific verbal warning will be given.
- For the 2nd misbehavior in a single day the student will be given the Stop and Think Card to put their name and date at the top.
- For the 3rd misbehavior in a single day the student will move to another seat in the room. The student will need to complete the card. They will also take the card home a parent or guardian to sign and bring back the next day; What did you do? In detail 5 w’s. (who, what, when, where, why)
- Why did you choose to do it?
- What is your plan to do better?
Volunteers
Parents, we need you!!! We need all sorts of help to make our school year go well. We can use any kind of help you can offer. If at all possible, please find a little time each week to help us by volunteering in the classroom. Your presence makes a lot of difference to the success of many of our activities. If you are interested, please be sure to sign up!
Donations and Field Trips
We will be asking for a $20.00 donation this year. It will cover a current events magazine, class activities and some crafts, and our Field Trips. We do not know yet what the District budget will allow as far as field trips, but we hope to make one in the Fall and another one in the Spring. Please make your check payable to Traverse Mountain Elementary School.
Conferences
My door is always open to you. Please feel free to discuss with me any concerns or worries you have. If you would like to schedule a conference, please call or email me and we will arrange a time to meet. I will check email and phone messages at the end of the school day. I consider that we are partners in the education your child receives. I am always interested in your questions.
Grading Policies
Grades are reported several times throughout the year.
We are on a Standards Based Report Card.
